Back again
Sunday 10 March, 2019, 17:39

Wow, nearly five years since the last update. Things have changed a lot during those five years, and at some point during that time, some nefarious bastard gained access to my ftp site and password protected all my databases. I gave up on the site at that point and just left it, but some effort this afternoon has resurrected it. So, what's changed? Since my last update, I gained a place on the refuelling team at RAF Fairford for the Royal International Air Tattoo. This year will be my 6th show, and I have made some amazing friends. Last year's show saw me pop the question to my partner Jane, and we are getting married this August. Lucy is now 11(!) and will obviously be one of the bridesmaids. She is turning out to be a truly wonderful young lady who makes me so proud every single day. ast year I bought myself a DJI Mavic Pro drone, so I need to upload a load of those photos. I need to re-familiarise myself with all the code that I originally wrote though, so I'm not tackling that today. The Google Maps are all broken, because it's no longer free. I need to figure out how to fix that, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased that it's all working again.

I'm back…
Saturday 1 March, 2014, 22:18

After nearly 18 months of zero activity and development on the site, I'm finally up and running again. Without going into the reasons why, it's taken me this long to get back up and running, with my own space and my own equipment again. I have no ideas for continuing development of the site (yet), but I do plan on getting out and about taking photos and visiting tors again. It feels good!

More mapping tools
Thursday 19 July, 2012, 21:47

Another mapping function added tonight. Just a simple one… click the new Link button on the map toolbar, and you get a popup box with a copyable link. That link takes you right back to the map as you see it there. Ideal if you need to send someone a link to a specific OS map.

Trig points on maps
Tuesday 10 July, 2012, 22:39

I added another tool to my mapping application tonight. Click the Trig point button to activate it, then click anywhere on the map. Markers will be displayed showing every trig point within 10Km. Click the marker for more details. I have also added another button above to clear the map again. It needs a bit of tidying, but I'm off to do that now…

Red Arrows Signed Photo
Saturday 14 April, 2012, 16:58

A few weeks ago I was contacted out of the blue by a chap I used to go to school with, who is now stationed at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus where the Red Arrows are training for the forthcoming display season. He very generously offered to obtain a one-off signed photo for me, asking me to email a photo to be printed out. The one I chose was of the whole team at Bristol Balloon Fiesta in August last year. The team decided that they could not sign it out of respect for Flight Lieutenants Jon Egging and Sean Cunningham, who appear in the picture. However, within an hour or so, an RAF Photographer took the image below. The team then signed that one for me instead!

I am hugely thankful to Staff Sergeant Ben Feasby.

Wednesday 28 March, 2012, 23:07

It occurred to me earlier this evening that it might be useful to use the Google Maps API to enhance the Dartmoor car parks page so that it provides directions from an entered postcode. I also took the opportunity to add my frame fixing code to those pages, so lots of links out there on the internet now show the page inside its itended frame with the contents and title intact. For example:

Weather Webcam Goes Live
Tuesday 6 March, 2012, 20:59

The webcam ran all day today, faithfully uploading images every 10 minutes, so tonight after work I mounted it in place and made it live on the website. The position is a compromise. The ideal place to mount it is in the conservatory looking south west out over the race course. But summer temperatures in there will quickly ruin a smartphone, so until I can build a fan-cooled enclosure, that's out. As a result it's now facing North out of the spare room window. Unfortunately, as the birch tree sprouts leaves the view will diminish, but as neighbour privacy was high on my list of concerns, I've had to settle for this. I may change it over the next few weeks.

Weather Webcam
Sunday 4 March, 2012, 21:11

Just now I finally managed to get a working webcam for my
Weather website. As I had hoped, I managed to get my old HTC Hero smartphone serving up jpgs on my LAN. My weather PC takes a jpg from the phone every ten minutes, overlays the current date, time and temperature, then uploads to the site, during daylight hours. I've taken it all offline for now though, as I need to find a suitable place to mount it, and a long power lead. Hopefully by next weekend it will be up and running.

Tor Fly-bys
Sunday 8 January, 2012, 20:45

I'm quite pleased with this one. I've been reading Google's KML reference recently, and it occurred to me that it would be pretty neat of there was a link on each Tor Details page here that when clicked, would open Google Earth, fly you to the tor in question, then fly you around it. I've just added a link to the tor page, but check this one of Yes Tor out:

Another Tor Visiting Milestone
Tuesday 27 December, 2011, 18:41

I've now visited all of the extreme tors on the Moor, not just the most Northery/Easterly/Southerly/Westerly ones, but the highest and the most isolated too. This follows two visits up to Okehampton to tick off Ashbury Tor last weekend, and Cleave Tor today. There is nothing to call between these two as the most northerly tor. The GPS track for both shows a maximum northing of 94070. One of them must be slightly further north than the other, but not by any amount that I can be bothered to measure!

Most Northerly: Ashbury Tor

or Cleave Tor

Most Westerly: Brent Tor

Highest: Yes Tor

Most Isolated: Fur Tor

Most Easterly: Bot Tor

Most Southerly: Western Beacon
